This class involves performing a variety of non-crime-related support field duties. The work involves performing school crossing guard activities in support of law enforcement operation and administration. Incumbents function only in a support capacity with no arrest or enforcement authority and no power to carry weapons or respond to emergency calls. Work is performed under established policy and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
High school diploma or its equivalent with sufficient experience to have acquired the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the duties of a school crossing guard.
JOB COMPLEXITY:
Position involves work where the tasks are routine and directly related.
CONSEQUENCE OF ACTIONS:
The number one concern is the safety of students and adults crossing the streets of the school where the individual is assigned.
ASSETS:
Position does not involve any internal asset control responsibility.
WORK CONTROLS:
Work is performed independently and is reviewed and supervised by the School Crossing Guard Supervisor.
PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Position involves normal day-to-day contact with the public and with other members of the Sheriff's Office.
SAFETY OF OTHERS:
Responsible for maintaining the safety of children and adults crossing the streets of the school, which the guard is, assigned to.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Work does not involve any significant physical effort beyond that encountered in normal everyday activities.
HAZARDS:
Work involves some hazards from vehicular traffic that cause the worker to use care and observe safety precautions to prevent any danger.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed outside and will occasionally be in unpleasant weather conditions.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:
Position does not involve any significant supervisory authority.
PERSONNEL SUPERVISED:
Position does not involve the supervision of Sheriff's Office personnel.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Assists children and adults crossing the street and ensures their safety crossing the streets.
Prepares equipment such as mile-per-hour signs and other items needed to perform the duties of school crossing guard.
Assists children embarking and disembarking on school buses.
Maintains equipment used to perform duties of school crossing guard.
Assists bus flow to and from the school.
Reports traffic problems on the roads of the school to the supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions communicated in the English language.
Ability to effectively communicate safety and traffic instructions in spoken English.
Ability to deal effectively with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of spelling and correct English usage.
Knowledge of local laws and general familiarity with state law.
