Maintenance Assistant

Starting Pay: $45,917/year
This class entails inspecting the general condition of the facility, fire and safety equipment; and reporting all discrepancies to the maintenance supervisor. Requires performing, floor, carpet, wall cleaning and minor carpentry and general construction repairs/modifications with inmates. Work is performed under the general supervision of the maintenance supervisor or maintenance specialist, and is reviewed for results and compliance with industry standards and code requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
High school diploma or its equivalent; minimal experience working with electrical, carpentry, plumbing, buffing, stripping floors and painting.
JOB COMPLEXITY
Work requires the individual to apply some working knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment necessary for installation, maintenance and repair of equipment and facility structure in a large facility as well as various other systems as necessary.
CONSEQUENCE OF ACTIONS
This position is responsible for inspecting the facility's mechanical, electrical, and mobile and custodial equipment for proper operation and compliance with established safety and health regulations.
ASSETS
Position involves some internal asset control responsibility through the handling and safeguarding of maintenance equipment and supplies.
WORK CONTROLS
Work is performed under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, and tutelage of the Maintenance Specialist.
- 80% - Maintain work area to include cleaning floors, painting, clean carpets
- 20% - Maintain records and reports on materials/equipment used
PERSONAL CONTACTS
Contacts are generally with Sheriff's Office personnel that work in the jail facility with daily close contact with the inmates.
SAFETY OF OTHERS
Position involves some responsibility for the safety of employees and inmates in the facility through the installation and maintenance of facility supplies and equipment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
Position regularly involves heavy manual labor requiring the worker to exert strenuous physical effort.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Reviews and prioritizes daily work orders assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor. Cleans buffs, strips and wax floors.
- Paints items and areas as necessary.
- Cleans carpets with carpet dirt/stain extraction equipment.
- Maintains records and reports on materials and equipment used; notifies maintenance supervisor of needed supplies and equipment as needed.
- Operates a variety of electrically powered tools and equipment.
- Responds to daily system failures such as leaks, water line breaks, etc.
- Checks facility telephones and television equipment for proper operation.
- Performs a variety of building maintenance tasks, including some grounds work if necessary. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Applicant should have knowledge of facility and grounds maintenance practices and procedures.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals, guides, and specifications associated with the job.
- Ability to analyze information identifies potential problems and performs preventative maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain the tools and equipment required for the job.
- Ability to perform basic carpentry, masonry, floor repair work.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Applicant should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
